How to Choose the Right Boiler for Your Home

boilersheatingbuying guide

Choosing a new boiler is a big decision — it’s an investment that will keep your home warm and your hot water flowing for the next 10-15 years. With so many options available, how do you know which one is right for you?

The Three Main Types of Boiler

Combi Boilers

The most popular choice in UK homes, combi (combination) boilers provide both central heating and hot water on demand — no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank.

Best for: Small to medium-sized homes with 1-2 bathrooms.

Pros:

  • Compact — saves space
  • Hot water on demand
  • Energy efficient
  • Lower installation costs

Cons:

  • Can struggle with multiple taps running at once
  • Not ideal for homes with high hot water demand

System Boilers

System boilers work with a hot water cylinder but don’t need a cold water tank in the loft. They can supply hot water to multiple taps simultaneously.

Best for: Larger homes with 2+ bathrooms.

Pros:

  • Strong water pressure to multiple outlets
  • Compatible with solar thermal panels
  • No loft tank needed

Cons:

  • Requires space for a hot water cylinder
  • Hot water can run out (but it reheats relatively quickly)

Heat-Only (Regular) Boilers

Also known as conventional or traditional boilers, these work with both a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft.

Best for: Older properties with existing traditional heating systems.

Pros:

  • Compatible with older radiator systems
  • Can supply lots of hot water at once
  • Works well with solar thermal

Cons:

  • Requires the most space
  • More complex installation
